Part-Time to Full-Time and Rehire Policy

Part-Time to Full-Time and Rehire Policy

If you employ part-time employees but provide coverage only for full-time employees, part-time employees who become full-time employees do not have to serve a probationary period, provided the employee has been working for the length of the probationary period. If only part of the probationary period has been served, only the remainder of the probationary period must be served as a full-time employee.

In addition, employees who terminate employment and who are then rehired within one year do not have to serve a new probationary period. The effective date of the coverage will depend on the benefit waiting period (BWP) of the group.

If the group's BWP is date of hire (DOH) or 90 days, the rehire date or the date when the employee became full-time is the effective date.

Example:

  • Group's BWP is 90 days and EE's rehire date is 3/17/2021
    • The effective date of the medical and/or dental plan is 3/17/2021

If the group's BWP is first of the month following 0 days, 30 days or 60 days, the effective date is first of the following month.

Example:

  • Group's BWP is first of the month following 60 days and EE's rehire date is 3/17/2021
    • The effective date of the medical and/or dental plan is 4/1/2021
